Resource Wars - Can We Survive Them? - by Stephen Lendman

"This article asks: can we survive our resource wars? The answer is only if we stop waging them and start using our superior intelligence to protect the earth, not destroy it as we're doing now."
This article poses a serious question unaddressed in the mainstream concerned only with the here and now and needs and wishes of the privileged. That attitude threatens the survival of what Noam Chomsky calls "biology's only experiment with higher intelligence" in his new book "Interventions." He referred to the threat of nuclear weapons proliferation, but his comment applies to the theme of this article - that resource wars and our failure to seek alternatives to fossil fuels and nuclear power increases the risk one day the planet no longer will be able to sustain human life or much of anything else.
In his earlier book, "Failed States," Chomsky addressed three issues he said concern him most - "the threat of nuclear war, environmental disaster (of the kind global warming will cause unless stopped in time), and the fact that the government of the world's only superpower is acting in ways that increase the likelihood of (causing) these catastrophes" by its reckless actions. Chomsky also raised a fourth issue heightening the risk further - that the "American system" is in danger of losing its "historic values (of) equality, liberty and meaningful democracy" because of the destructive path it's on. In "Interventions" he quoted Albert Einstein and noted philosopher Bertrand Russell 50 years ago before we understood the destructive nature of global warming - "Shall we put an end to the human race, or shall mankind renounce war?"
This writer is in full accord with Einstein, Russell and Chomsky. Plainly put, they said our future is bleak unless we use our superior intelligence to protect the earth, not destroy it as we're now doing slowly by "warming" it or swiftly by an unintentional nuclear holocaust. That means renouncing wars able to destroy planetary life in a day and end fossil fuel and nuclear power use that one day will cause what a nuclear winter would end up doing first. The choice is ours and time may be shorter than we think. Will we choose wisely? We'd better. We're all in this together.
